Brazil Has Banned Use of Phosphatidylcholine-Based Injections for Fat Removal
ANVISA, the Brazilian equivalent of the FDA, that regulates approval and manufacturing of new drugs, has issued a statement banning use of phosphatidylcholine-based products for injectable fat removal because they have never been approved for cosmetic use. The agency has pursued litigation and fines against individuals and companies selling these products. ANVISA has also stated that Lipostabil®, in which phosphatidylcholine is the active ingredient, lacks clinical studies to support its safety and efficacy.
